Workshop - Wax Build up Technique

Additive Sculptural Process for Jewelry Applications

Here is an example of the tools we will use in the class and a finished model constructed of blue sculpture wax. This item will be a brooch cast in 18kt gold with an amethyst cabochon bullet.

The second group of photos shows the complete sequence of building a man's ring in red sculpture wax. The process begins by heating the steel tool in the flame of an alcohol lamp and gathering wax on the heated tool. The wax is applied to the black jade cabochon to create the bezel which is the basic shape the ring is built upon.

As the bezel takes shape the wax construction continues to grow into the body of the ring and a shank is formed. The ring shank is further accomplished by building up the wax form on a ring mandrel.

Once the shank is fully developed the shape of the ring is refined and the finished wax model is ready to cast.

Each of these preceding items are indicative of my application of waxwork construction; using the build up sculptural method to create jewelry models for casting in precious metal.
